On Basis of Pattern & Location
Leucoderma, also known as vitiligo, can be classified into several types based on the pattern and extent of depigmentation. The main types of leucoderma include:

Non-Segmental Vitiligo
-
Generalized Vitiligo: This is the most common type, characterized by widespread and symmetrical depigmentation across various parts of the body.
-
Universal Vitiligo: In this type, nearly the entire body, including both visible and non-visible areas, experiences depigmentation.
Segmental Vitiligo:
-
In contrast to non-segmental vitiligo, segmental vitiligo involves depigmentation in a limited segment or area of the body. It often appears in a unilateral distribution, affecting one side of the body.
-
Focal Vitiligo: Refers to depigmentation that occurs in a small, localized area of the body.
-
Mucosal Vitiligo: Involves depigmentation of mucous membranes, such as the lips and the tissues inside the mouth.
-
Acrofacial Vitiligo: Primarily affects the extremities, including the hands and face.
-
Mixed Vitiligo: Involves a combination of different types of vitiligo within the same individual.
Type of leucoderma On Basis of progression and stability

Further, Leucoderma can also be categorized into different stages based on its progression and stability. The two main categories are stable and progressive leucoderma.
-
Stable Leucoderma: In stable vitiligo, the depigmented patches have stopped spreading, and there is no noticeable increase in their size or number. The condition reaches a state of stability, where the affected areas remain unchanged for an extended period. Stable vitiligo is often characterized by well-defined, clearly demarcated white patches on the skin. The absence of new patches or growth in existing patches is a key feature of stability. Individuals with stable vitiligo may experience periods where the condition remains static or may even show signs of repigmentation, where the color gradually returns to the affected areas.
-
Progressive Leucoderma: Progressive vitiligo, on the other hand, involves the continuous spreading of depigmented patches to new areas of the skin. New patches may appear, and existing patches may enlarge, merge, or develop irregular borders. Progressive vitiligo is often characterized by actively changing and expanding depigmentation.
Understanding whether vitiligo is stable or progressive is crucial for treatment planning.
.
Distinguishing between stable and progressive vitiligo is essential for effective treatment planning. Dr. Bharti Makkar, with her extensive experience in treating leucoderma, carefully figures out what type of leucoderma someone has before deciding on the best treatment. This personalized approach not only aims to manage symptoms effectively but also encourages skin repigmentation. We believe that by recognizing the specific nature of vitiligo, we can provide more targeted and successful interventions, supporting our patients on their journey to healthier skin and overall well-being."
