Leucoderma occurs when the skin loses its normal color due to decreased production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. It may appear as small patches or cover larger areas of the body. Leucoderma can be caused by genetic factors, environmental triggers, autoimmune disorders, or thyroid dysfunction.

It happens when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment, die or stop functioning properly. The exact cause of vitiligo remains unknown, but it is believed to involve an immune system malfunction, where the body mistakenly attacks and destroys its own melanocytes.
Understanding Leucoderma (Vitiligo) in Ayurveda
Ayurveda views Leucoderma as a manifestation of an imbalance primarily in the body's "Pitta" and "Kapha" doshas. According to this holistic approach to health, the skin is considered a reflection of one's inner health, and an imbalance in doshas can affect the skin's integrity.
Causes according to Ayurveda
Imbalanced Diet: Consumption of excessive sour, spicy, or fermented foods can aggravate Pitta and contribute to the development of Leucoderma.
Impaired Digestion: Poor digestion leads to the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body, affecting the skin's health.
Stress and Mental Factors: Emotional stress, anxiety, and prolonged mental agitation are believed to disrupt the body's harmony and affect skin health.
